“Daddy, is this real?”

“Yes, of course, son. If you can touch it, it’s real.”

Me: “But, ya know, not all real things are tangible.”

Angry/Skeptical father: “Ha, yeah. Sure. Like what?”

Me: “…love.”

I was going to say God. This is a conversation I had with a customer last year. I wish I had said God.

It’s one of the hard things that skeptical people deal with. “How can your god be real if you can’t see him or touch him?”

It’s a hard question to answer. My God created me. He created us for his glory. His breath of life. There’s so much more to a human life than sperm and an egg. God has a will.

Psalms 139:13-16

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

I’m blown away by this. Before we were born, God had everything figured out, from our first cry to final breath. Jesus commands our destiny. God has touched me. I’m here, you’re here, err, there…reading…yeah, you get it. God touched my life when I was created. Before I was created. Here, now, as I’m typing. Jesus always has his hand on me, and because of this, Satan cannot touch me.

Come at me, bro.

“We need to stop giving people excuses to not believe in God. You’ve probably heard the expression, “I believe in God, just not organized religion.” I don’t think people would say that if the church truly lived like we are called to live. The expression would change to, “I can’t deny what the church does, but I don’t believe in their God.” At least then they’d address their rejection of God rather than use the church as a scapegoat.”
